PRESS RELEASE: IVI Highlights Patient-Centered Approach to Health Technology Assessment at 5th Annual Methods Summit

Alexandria, VA – May 20, 2024The Innovation and Value Initiative (IVI), a non-profit research organization committed to advancing the science, practice, and use of health technology assessment (HTA) in healthcare, announced the release of the summary for its 2024 IVI 5th Annual Methods Summit: The Future of Patient-Centered Health Technology Assessment.

The 2024 IVI 5th Annual Methods Summit was a one-day, in-person event with a live stream option on March 14, 2024, in Washington, D.C. Over 260 participants and thought leaders from the healthcare ecosystem came together for facilitated panel discussions. The Summit provided a collaborative and inclusive forum where stakeholders heard a call to action and committed to working together to prioritize incorporating lived experiences into future HTA practices.

“The discussions and insights shared at the 5th Annual Methods Summit underscore the urgent need for a patient-centered focus in health technology assessment,” said Jason Spangler, IVI’s Chief Executive Officer. “By prioritizing patient perspectives and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, particularly patients, we can drive meaningful change and create a healthcare ecosystem that truly serves the needs of all.”

Four key themes emerged from the Summit:

  • Engaging Patients as True Partners in Health Technology Assessment. Comprehensive stakeholder engagement and the integration of patient perspectives throughout the assessment process are essential for patient-centered HTA.
  • Addressing Equity Across HTA. Ensuring that all HTA methods consider health equity implications, including disparities in affordability and the lack of trust in the medical community, emerged as critical aspects to address.
  • Exploring Innovative Methods in Patient-Centered HTA. The Summit highlighted innovative methodologies, such as real option value (ROV), machine learning (ML), and other artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, emphasizing the need to explore new methodologies beyond traditional ones.
  • Continuing Collaboration for Patient-Centered HTA. Collaboration among patients, researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders is essential for advancing patient-centered HTA practices, emphasizing open communication channels, and building trust with marginalized patient groups.

“As we reflect on the Summit’s discussions, the overarching theme, ‘You pay either way,’ underscores the significant cost of neglecting patient-centered healthcare practices,” said Spangler. “It’s imperative that we prioritize patient needs, preferences, and perspectives in healthcare decision-making to avoid adverse outcomes and societal consequences.”

The 5th Annual IVI Methods Summit was partially funded through generous contributions from Pfizer. Unrestricted funds from IVI’s diverse membership also support this work.

The audio recordings of the keynote and panel discussions from the 5th Annual IVI Methods Summit are available on IVI’s website.
